New History
City infrastructure for Suzhou
The objective of this workshop revolves around designing the urban infrastructure of Suzhou. Over the past century, we have witnessed the modernization of cities, driven by the need to cater to evolving living requirements. However, challenges have emerged during the modernization of cities with rich historical and cultural backgrounds. It is crucial that modernization incorporates a harmonious interplay between the old and the new. People have encountered difficulties in striking a balance between preserving traditional culture and embracing modern life. The pivotal question at hand is: how can we move forward and ensure that traditional culture continues to thrive in the future, rather than confining it solely to museums?
To tackle this challenge, we must undertake a comprehensive examination of the entire process by which a city's traditional culture takes shape. This encompasses the stages of exploration, contemplation, experimentation, and the eventual accumulation of historical significance, culminating in the creation of a recognized cultural heritage. Building upon this foundation, we can embark on new quests, foster fresh perspectives, and make innovative strides to enrich the future cultural landscape, while still honoring the historical legacy.
