Borrowed scenery (借景, jie jing)
Folding screen
This conceptual project revolves around the garden design principle known as "borrowed scenery." Through deliberate architectural arrangements, the garden offers glimpses of captivating landscapes, enabling observers to appreciate special views. For instance, one might catch sight of a distant lake and mountains through a strategically placed door or window within the garden's layout.
To further enhance this concept, the inclusion of a mirror on a folding screen becomes a transformative element. By reflecting the surroundings, the mirror on the folding screen allows one to borrow interior or exterior landscapes. As the folding angle and position of the screen change, the scenery depicted on the screen also transforms accordingly. To introduce dynamism, window insulation film is incorporated. Depending on the contrast in lighting between the two sides of the screen, it can resemble a glass panel from the darker side and a mirror from the brighter side. When the lighting is balanced, one can observe the objects positioned behind the screen merging with their mirrored reflections.
